New Referendum Information Paper

Posted on August 26, 2010

2011 will be a busy time for Welsh Voters with the Assembly elections, the UK Government proposed referendum on the Alternative Vote system and the Welsh referendum on the powers of the National Assembly for Wales.  Voices for Change Cymru is keen to ensure that organisations across the third sector are well informed about all of these important issues and able to pass useful information on to their members and service users.

We will provide more information about the Assembly Elections (currently scheduled for 5 May) in due course and you can find information about the UK Government’s referendum on the Alternative Vote here (also currently scheduled for 5 May).

Our current priority is to ensure that sector is well informed about the Referendum on the powers of the National Assembly for Wales which is due to be held in the first quarter of 2011 (probably in March).  We want to ensure that individuals and groups know what the referendum is about (and what it is not about) and are aware of what a yes or no vote will mean and the implications for the third sector.  Below is a new information briefing paper that we have produced all about the Referendum which we hope will be helpful to you.

We will also be working with the National Assembly outreach service to offer information sessions to the third sector about the referendum so look out for more details on this coming your way soon.  In the meantime please feel free to contact us at vfcc@wcva.org.uk with any questions or queries.

Big Society red tape purge

Posted on August 24, 2010

Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society, and Mark Prisk, Minister for Business and Enterprise announced this week (17 August) that Lord Hodgson of Astley Abbotts will lead a new cutting red-tape taskforce to flush out burdens on the voluntary sector

The Government is committed to making it easier to run charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises. Reducing bureaucratic burdens will free-up time and resources for these organisations to make a difference in their communities and help mobilise the Big Society.

More information on the announcement can be found on the Cabinet Office website.

WCVA Regional Policy Event, 5 October, Rhyl

Posted on August 20, 2010

Part 1: Public sector funding constraints – third sector funding

Widespread cuts in third sector funding are already taking place in England, and more are expected next year. This session will consider how the Welsh Assembly Government will decide its budget for 2011/12, and the implication for its direct funding for the sector, and funding from local government, health and other bodies.

There is a commitment by the Welsh Assembly Government to send a Welsh Minister or senior civil servant to provide their input. There will be a chance to discuss, in smaller groups, what is happening and the priorities for organisations. Some County Voluntary Councils will be present to comment on what is happening in their area.

Part 2: Making the Work Programme work in Wales
The Work Programme is the UK government’s new approach to delivering employment related support services and will replace support provided through Flexible New Deal and Pathways to Work. The Work Programme Framework should be in place by the end of the year and the DWP plans to have the Work Programme operational by the summer of 2011. This session will debate what this means for Wales and consider how the third sector can be involved.

There will be an overview of the programme and the view from the third sector from WCVA. SERCO, a lead bidder will provide a view of the challenges of delivery and engagement with the third sector. 3SC will provide input on creating and managing consortia to effectively deliver the Work Programme in Wales. There will also be a chance to attend workshops on how to make the Work Programme third sector friendly, or the benefits of third sector approaches.

If you would like to attend please click these links below to download the booking form and draft programme.

Please return the booking form and £12.00 per delegate to me no later than Friday 17 September. Bookings are only secured upon receipt of payment.

Trustee’s Week, 25 – 31 October

Posted on August 20, 2010

The Charity Commission is launching its first ever Trustees’ Week in October and it is looking for volunteers from across Wales to help raise the profile and increase understanding of trusteeship.

The aim of the awareness week, which will run between 25 and 31 October, is to highlight the vital role trustees play in the sector and encourage more people to consider becoming trustees.

As part of our media campaign we are looking for case studies of people who are willing to support the campaign and would be happy to talk through the benefits of trusteeship in the context of their charity.

We know that trusteeship provides the opportunity to learn and develop new skills, meet people who share a passion for a particular cause or issue, and make a real difference through the work of a charity.

If you are a trustee and willing to share your experiences, please email me at rosie.stokes@charitycommission.gsi.gov.uk

The media campaign is just one part of the week. We also hope that under the umbrella of Trustees’ Week other organisations and charities will hold events celebrating and promoting trusteeship around that October week. Again we would love to hear from you if you are planning an event to promote Trustees’ Week.
