In December 2024 Denbigh Rugby Club were awarded £22,500 from the Clocaenog Forest Wind Farm fund towards removing 22 existing metal halide floodlights and replace them with 14 LED floodlights.
The primary motivations for this project were financial sustainability and environmental responsibility as highlighted in a recent Energy Sustainability report the Club commissioned.
North Wales WRU Representative mentions:
“The installation of new floodlights at Clwb Rygbi Dinbych, funded in the main by the Clocaenog Wind Farm, will have a significant enhancement on training and match opportunities for players of all ages. These lights will ensure that players have a safe space in the community to play rugby - Not only does it have a huge impact on player development but also supports sustainability within the community.”
The use of LED lamps would require less energy and so will reduce demand on the local electricity supply network and the reduction in running costs would help secure the continuation of opportunities for sport to be played on the dark winter evenings, thereby maintaining and improving opportunities for service users to access physical exercise.
The improved quality of lighting would help ensure the safety of players and other service users, whilst also allowing the facilities to be used more frequently by other organisations. In addition, the club has recently agreed to accommodate training sessions every Monday evening for the Vale of Clwyd Hub of the North Wales Crusaders Rugby League Foundation - a welcome addition to the range of organisations able to use our facilities.
The Mini Juniors Committee Chair says:
“As respects to the new lights, it has been fantastic for our training sessions within the Mini Junior section, with 8 teams training every Friday evening. It’s meant that we can continue to train without the need to be moving around or make the training sessions shorter.”
