Colwyn Bay Rugby Club Case Study

When Colwyn Bay Rugby Club secured funding through the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm Community Fund, the club set out to reduce its environmental impact while strengthening its long-term financial sustainability.  The grant enabled the installation of a modern solar panel and energy storage system, helping the club generate its own renewable electricity and reduce reliance on energy from fossil fuels. 

As a well-used community facility, the rugby club plays an important role beyond sport, hosting social events and providing a meeting place for local residents. Rising energy costs were placing increasing pressure on resources that could otherwise be invested back into facilities and services.

The new solar energy system is already delivering benefits. Following a particularly sunny period, the club reported measurable savings on electricity costs through detailed monitoring technology installed alongside the panels. These savings are creating opportunities to reinvest funds into improving facilities, equipment and future developments for the benefit of members and the wider community. 

The project contributes to local climate action by replacing a proportion of electricity that would otherwise be generated from fossil fuels. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lowers the club's carbon footprint, demonstrating how community organisations can play a practical role in tackling climate change.  By investing in renewable energy, the club is also providing a visible example of environmental responsibility, encouraging others in the community to consider sustainable solutions.

The financial savings generated through the system are expected to support the club's future plans, including potential investment in floodlighting for the main pitch. While such projects require significant funding, the reduction in ongoing energy costs will help make future improvements more affordable and sustainable.

Through a relatively modest investment, the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm Community Fund has helped Colwyn Bay Rugby Club reduce carbon emissions, cut operating costs and strengthen its ability to serve the community for years to come.
