Rhyl Youth Boxing Club
Rhyl Youth Amateur Boxing Club CIC has improved its training facilities following a £23,759.20 investment from the Gwynt y Môr Community Fund. The grant was used to purchase new equipment for the Strength and Cardio Rooms.
The club currently supports 15 registered competing members under the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association (WABA).
Since purchasing the new cardio and weight equipment, the club has seen noticeable improvements in strength and fitness for its WABA boxers.
The improved facilities resulted in three new boxers being able to compete under the WABA, and the club hopes to get more boxers into the WABA later on this year.
The funding did not just positively impact competitive boxing prospects for local people. The new cardio and strength training areas were also used for ‘Keep Fit’ sessions, focused on weight management, toning, and general fitness.
The club has noticed an increase in its female membership due to this new approach, including players from the Rhyl Rugby Club under 13s team. This is allowing the club to expand its offer to the community, and not be ‘just’ a boxing training facility.
The club have been able to make an impact to under-represented groups, by working with Denbighshire County Council’s homelessness prevention scheme, as well as the West Rhyl Young People’s Project and the Rhyl RISE Project.
Their work with the homelessness prevention scheme was recently showcased on ITV News Wales. The club aims to continue building community partnerships over the coming months.
A spokesperson from the club said “Even in such a small time scale, the difference the new facilities has provided has been amazing…it’s been a lot better than what we expected and could have wished for and I am sure after another 6 months the numbers given above will be better again”.
